Tired of ebay

Ebay has really become an awful virtual marketplace. Sure, there are still some great deals on there and if you are looking for some truly iconic bro gear to up your street cred, there are few competitors. However, upon closer inspection you will realize that ebay has lost its collective touch. A couple quick searches will reveal that "Buy it now" has conquered virtually all the listings. In case all of the sellers want my opinion, here it is:

I'm not on ebay to pay whatever arbitrary price you set. I am on there to win prizes and score cheap gear.  Half of the ebay fun was beating out some schmo for a $10.00 shirt with a last second bid. I'm afraid to say it but the glory days are long gone.

Pretty sure my neighbor is a drug kingpin

Facts:

1. Always several dumpy cars parked outside of her place
2. She is never without a dufflebag, backpack, or large "purse"
3. She keeps weird hours (i.e. never goes to work during the day, yet doesn't leave regularly enough at night to indicate that she works a night shift)

In other news, check out the new Brooks Bros swag:

Bro King Status

At some point in every bro's journey through this game we call life, he eventually reaches the following question:

Is there anything more Bro than a vintage, game-worn, Utah Jazz jersey?

And my answer to that is: Why, yes there is.
A vintage Greg Ostertag, game-worn, Utah Jazz jersey.
Check mate.

Burrr burrr!!

In honor of Gucci's recent release from the Fulton County (AKA the 404,  the 808,  Hotlanta, or Houstatlantavegas) jail, I decided to dedicate a post in his honor. I hope that he's decided to be a good boy but as he readily admits, he is stoopid so we probably shouldn't expect him to become a member of the Vienna_Boys'_Choir overnight.

In other incarcerated rappers news,  Lil Weezy was recently caught with contraband. I think this is a pretty silly rule. How is Weezy supposed to stay on top of his craft or even drop a couple songs if these prisons are taking away his tools? I hope the right person sweeps that shit under the proverbial rug.

In my research about Lil Wayne, I was surprised to see that President Obama has referenced him several times in public:

Speaking to a largely African-American audience during a general election campaign town hall speech in Georgia, Obama exhorted children to stay in school and achieve their dreams through education and perseverance instead of hoping for shortcuts to fame and riches, stating: "You are probably not that good a rapper. Maybe you are the next Lil Wayne, but probably not, in which case you need to stay in school."

After assuming the Presidency, Obama later echoed this theme of personal and familial responsibility—and the difficulty of achieving Lil Wayne's lyrical skills or success—during an address to a meeting commemorating the 100th anniversary of the NAACP, telling the audience:

"They might think they’ve got a pretty jump shot or a pretty good flow, but our kids can’t all aspire to be LeBron or Lil Wayne. I want them aspiring to be scientists and engineers, doctors and teachers, not just ballers and rappers. I want them aspiring to be a Supreme Court justice. I want them aspiring to be president of the United States of America."

On the topic of Tom Waits

Some select Tom Waits pieces:

that last clip is an intro to Jim Jarmusch's magnum opus Down By Law

Gorgeous KEF subwoofer at a price

I already have one amazing subwoofer (http://www.polkaudio.com/homeaudio/dsw/index.php?s=dswmicropro3000) and one that has vintage street credibility. so it's needless to say that i'm not in the market for bass right now. however, you don't have the same excuse as me. you should buy this woofer right now.

Two guys walk in to a diner...

So I've been listening to the Tom Waits album Nighthawks at the Diner today, and I thought of his scene from Coffee and Cigarettes with Iggy Pop. Jim Jarmusch, probably my favorite director, came up with this little gem. In Coffee and Cigarettes, Jarmusch had friends and people from his movies talk over coffee and cigarettes. It may not sound like much, but it makes for a pretty damn classic movie. I'm pretty sure this dialogue is ad libbed, and it is quite an accurate display of character for both Waits and Pop. If there is one musician I would want to go drink with, it would have to be Tom Waits. The guy is cooler than cool. Anyway, here is the scene:

Another great scene from Coffee and Cigarettes involves Bill Murray and the RZA and the GZA from the Wu-Tang Clan, all of whom are personal friends with Jarmusch:

Album Review: Gorillaz - Plastic Beach

To preface this review, I remember many, many years ago sitting around with some of my friends one summer, when a new music video came on MTV. It was a bunch of cartoon characters dancing around in a graveyard, to some odd, but very catch beats. The song was the first Gorillaz single, Clint Eastwood. A formidable name for a formidable song. This would be my introduction to Del tha Funky Homosapien as rapper, and I definitely appreciate the underground influence that he brought to the table at the time. This was back when I was a little kid, so my only way of finding new music was MTV music videos or singles played on the radio. I eventually got the album that went along with the single, and it contained some of the weirdest/coolest beats that I had ever heard. Needless to say the song Clint Eastwood is still stuck in my head to this day, as it is a very infectious song. So, that would be my introduction to Gorillaz, and I have always sought out their albums ever since. Plastic Beach, the most recent album from Gorillaz, is an interesting release. Within the music community, I would have to assume most people pigeon-hole Gorillaz as "pop" music. I will be the first to admit that I cannot stand pop music. I don't listen to the radio, and I hate 98% of the music I hear in bars/public domains where a well advertised song will raise your revenue stream. But, I digress. So, this newest album from Gorillaz has beats that could make people bounce their heads, stomp their feet, its marketable through music videos, etc. Its poppish. HOWEVER, it is an album that is put too well assembled to be considered pop music. One example of this is the great collection of collaborating artists. To list just a few of the collaborators on the album: Snoop Dogg (poppish these days), Kano, The Lebanese National Orchestra (awesome), Mos Def, Gruff Rhys, De La Soul, Mark E. Smith (probably my favorite decisions made on this album), Lou Reed(!), Bobby Womack, Mick Jones, Paul Simon, etc. Some of those names alone would indicate that this is much more than a pop album. I really like the overall cohesiveness of this album, and it also expands well on the previous Gorillaz albums, specifically their last release, Demon Days. This seems to be an obvious transition and expansions from previous musical ventures by Gorillaz as well. If for no other reason, you should give this album a listen simply to hear how they utilize all of the different collaborators. You will be appreciative if you are familiar with the collaborators work. I've got this album loaded up in my car for the summer, and I don't foresee it collecting dust any time soon. Young Buck

i'm not a big advocate of David Darnell Brown, better known to the public as Young Buck.... but when I saw this sign I knew I had no choice but to document the moment.

a few fun facts about Young Buck:

1. He represents the 615 (Nashville, TN)
2.  50 Cent dismissed him from G-Unit
3.  Young Buck is not a big advocate of DJ Khaled or Lil Weezy
4. His "music" is suspect at best. If you want a good headache, watch the whole video.
